Melanie C to headline Brisbane’s Big Gay Day

Former Spice Girl Melanie C has been announced as next year’s headline act for Brisbane LGBTIQ music festival Big Gay Day.

The festival has just revealed a huge lineup for 2020, also featuring Electric Fields, Cry Club, The Regime, and Being Jane Lane, according to The Music.

Girl Power icon Melanie C will headline the festival on Sunday 8 March – appropriately also International Women’s Day.

A pop idol of the queer community since her days as Sporty Spice in the 90s, she will appear with her drag group Sink the Pink.

Melanie C has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTIQ rights.

She appeared on stage at this year’s Brighton Pride wearing a trans flag to call for trans rights and acceptance of gender diversity, Vice reported in August.

“This is a flag that we don’t see often enough,” she told the crowd.

She has said she feels “very passionately” about rights for the community.

Big Gay Day will also feature local DJs, performers, and more.

It will raise money for LGBTIQ community groups including the Queensland AIDS Council, Brisbane Pride, Australian Transgender Support Association of Queensland, Open Doors Youth Service, Diverse Voices, and LGBTI Legal Service.

The festival will be held at The Wickham hotel in Fortitude Valley, with the street set to transform into a glittery rainbow celebration of our community and culture.

Tickets will be available from next week through Oztix.
