Singer and actor Janelle Monáe has taken to social media to seemingly come out as non-binary.
The queer icon this week shared a tweet that read, ‘There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary’, adding the hashtag #IAmNonbinary.
Though Monáe has not yet elaborated on the post, fans have overwhelmingly welcomed the news.
Many have congratulated Monáe on coming out and asked for an update on the star’s correct pronouns.
Non-binary people typically do not identify as entirely male or female – not to be confused with intersex, which refers to physical characteristics, though a person may be both.
Some non-binary people use binary he or she pronouns, while others use gender-neutral personal pronouns such as they.
Monáe has not yet posted any update regarding pronouns.
The icon previously came out in 2018 as pansexual, speaking in a Rolling Stone interview of having identified as bisexual before learning of the concept.
